In a country that claims to be the home of freedom and democracy, like the United States, a new chapter of "dictatorship" is dawning under the auspices of the "Trump administration." The administration has frozen a massive package of aid, grants, and assistance totaling over $2 billion, in addition to other government contracts worth $60 million, earmarked for Harvard University. This escalation targets one of the most prestigious academic institutions.
This development comes after weeks of tension between the Trump administration and a number of major American universities, against the backdrop of ongoing student and academic protests in support of Gaza and condemning the crimes of genocide in Palestine. On April 3, Harvard University received a letter from the Trump administration demanding a comprehensive change in its university policies and measures to prevent pro-Palestinian protests. The university rejected the request, as President Alan Garber stated, stressing that the academic administration would not comply with what he described as "political conditions unbecoming of an academic institution."
The Trump administration accuses the university of failing to create a safe and inclusive environment for Jewish students, considering that condoning anti-Israel student slogans and protests amounts to a form of discrimination. This campaign is part of a broader trend by the Trump administration to hold educational institutions accountable for their positions in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
